Issues In Missiology, Volume IA
Dr. Robert Patton, a medical doctor and veteran missionary with Baptist World Mission, has been burdened for three groups: (1) those who have never heard (2) those who are untaught, and (3) those who are being persecuted. Those who have not heard are unreached with the gospel. Those who are untaught need the Words of God in their own mother tongue. Those who suffer persecution are located primarily in Muslim or communist countries. In Volume 1A of Issues in Missiology, Dr. Patton addresses the challenge of persecution Christians are suffering in the third wave of persecution in the history of the church. The missionary needs to understand the nature and cause of persecution and the proper Christian response. All Christians are part of the body of Christ. When one part suffers, the entire body suffers. “Remember them that are in bonds as bound with them, and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.” (Hebrews 13:3) We must pray for our suffering brothers and sisters in Christ and do what we can to support them not only with our prayers but providing for their needs when we can do so. God uses persecution to mature us individually and as a part of His body to witness to a lost and dying world.

Issues In Missiology, Volume IB
One of the most challenging and difficult situations for missionaries on the field is the question of money. Missionaries in the USA are not considered wealthy. Most are considered relatively poor. But when the missionary arrives overseas, if he is in a third world (or 2/3 world) country, he often finds himself cast in the role of the wealthy American in contrast to those around him. This is a new and very difficult role to fill. Often the missionary does not think that the Bible is talking to him since he considers himself a relatively poor missionary. But in his target country, he is one of the elite rich, and the Bible is speaking directly to him in his role as a wealthy individual. Thus, the missionary is confronted with a situation of gross economic inequity. Furthermore, this problem is not decreasing, but increasing. When one compares the buying power of the missionary compared to the national, in 1820, it was about 3 to 1. The situation was tolerable at that time. However, by 1950, the difference was 35 to 1, and in 1992, it had increased further to 72 to 1. Indeed, 50% of the world’s population exists on a salary of less than $2.00 per day.33 This is an enormous difference. It seems at this time that the only persons who are willing to live in the slums are usually Catholic priests and nuns. They may have taken vows of poverty and celibacy and are able to adapt to the situation by adopting a very simple lifestyle similar to those around them. What is the protestant missionary, often married and with a family, going to do? The missionary usually chooses one of four types of adaptation. Some simply associate with their social and cultural equals. They isolate their contact with others. This is a big problem in the third world. Christianity has always especially impacted the poor and marginal individuals, and now the missionary isolates himself from them. With God’s help in this book, we will look more closely at answering money matters for the missionary.

Issues In Missiology, Volume II A&B
In Volume II of Issues in Missiology, Dr. Patton has combined two volumes into one book. Volume IIA addresses the subjects of Spiritual Warfare and Volume IIB, The Spiritual Life of the Missionary. Spiritual warfare is a reality not only in the developing world, but also in ministries in "developed" countries. The missionary must be prepared to deal with these spiritual realities. All missionaries, to be effective, must walk in the Spirit. God works through the missionary to accomplish His goals as he yields to Him and works in His power and wisdom, and not in his own strength

Issues In Missiology, Volume III, Thoughts About Translation
Dr. Robert Patton, a medical doctor and veteran missionary with Baptist World Mission, has been burdened for three groups: (1) those who have never heard (2) those who are untaught, and (3) those who are being persecuted. Those who have not heard are unreached with the gospel. Those who are untaught need the Word of God in their own mother tongue. Those who suffer persecution are located primarily in Muslim or communist countries. In Volume III, Dr. Patton relates his personal experiences in translating the entire Bible into the Sranantongo language. The translation has been used in radio and television broadcasts, two Bible Institutes, Bible commentaries, discipleship materials, and tracts impacting the country of Suriname. He outlines the need for the correct foundational text, the proper methods of translation, and awareness of pitfalls that await the missionary translator. He concludes his book by appealing for many workers to reach the millions without the Word of God in their mother tongue, knowing the fields “are white already to harvest” (John 4:35).

Issues In Missiology, Volume IV 2nd Edition
In Volume IV, Dr. Patton begins with an assessment of worldviews, not only those of major world religions and folk religion, but also western modernism, post-modernism, and post-postmodernism. This is followed by an assessment of the major world religions, with a special emphasis on folk religion, which is followed by 40% of the world population, though they may be nominally Christian, Islam, Hindu, etc. There is also a section on humanism, atheism, and atheistic communism, which at one time dominated nearly a third of the world’s population. Dr. Patton emphasizes that it is not only necessary to understand the worldview of the religion of the people whom we wish to reach, but also our own worldview, to avoid being “blindsided” by our own ethnocentrism. When possible, there are suggestions as to how to reach various groups with the gospel.

Issues In Missiology V, 2nd Ed-THow to Get to the Field, How to Stay on the Field.
The goals of Volume V are to assist the missionary in successfully arriving on the mission field and remaining there with an effective ministry. Two major problems in recruitment and deployment of missionaries are the great length of time missionaries are on deputation and the 50% attrition rate for return to the field after the first term of service. This volume addresses both issues. Beginning with the call of the missionary, there is a detailed discussion of deputation, and a smaller section on mission boards. Many missionaries are not able to successfully adapt to the foreign field. A substantial section of the book on cultural anthropology outlines many of the adjustments for the missionary, as well as the symptoms and treatment of culture shock. There is a short review of the importance of worldview in approaching evangelism, and a brief section on the missionary’s adaptation upon returning to the USA.
